Becoming Self-Aware

Becoming Self-Aware is the key to change (growth, improvement, expansion, etc.). After all, how can one expect to change if what needs to change is unknown? Furthermore, self-awareness, and thus change, cannot happen without first meeting a prerequisite: accepting the Truth.

Accepting Truth, regardless of what it may be, is always the first step one must take on the path of becoming self-aware. But how do we find the truth? How do we differentiate what is real from what is not? Like the excerpt below from Chapter 1 of Living in the Pause says, “It is only when we cultivate enough mindfulness to be still and quiet…that we are able to begin the process of discovering why it is that we do what we do…” Discovery cannot happen without investigation and  investigation cannot happen without reflection. So, the real question is not, “how can I find the truth?” The real question is, “How can I begin reflecting on my self and my circumstances?”

The answer to these questions and, for that matter, to most introspective endeavors is: PAUSE.





Excerpt from Chapter 1 of Living in the Pause: Life After Addiction, Divorce, and Business Loss:

It is only when we cultivate enough mindfulness to be still and quiet…that we are able to begin the process of discovering why it is that we do what we do so that we may uncover what it is that is causing our feelings of unhappiness or discontent, to ultimately choose what we may do differently so as to change ourselves and our circumstances.

After introducing ourselves to the Pause, we must be truthful during conversations with ourselves and we must not give in to the insanity that we have chosen to believe over our Truth. In the stillness we hear our truths and the answers to seemingly impossible problems: “Should I leave my job?” “Should I leave my spouse?” “Should I change my career?” By avoiding getting still and getting  quiet, our questions, and thus their answers, may only manifest as byproducts of fear, pain, stress, anxiety, etc. This is why often at an early age, we learn to avoid ‘negative’ catalysts, such as grief, by ignoring them or by assuming that our perceptions and beliefs are unchangeable by telling ourselves that “things just are the way they are.”

66793bee866ee2dc6d1816e7689be646Pausing is so powerful of a tool and so pivotal to growth and self-awareness that my new book (Living in the Pause) revolves entirely around it. Pausing creates everything: happiness, success, change, growth…you name it and Pausing is the direct cause.

Before I began Living in the Pause  and before becoming self-aware, my life was lived according to a ‘script.’ I was living according to a false-self that was a derivative of the ego which was comprised of what I did, what I had, and what others thought of me. It was not until I Paused long enough to step back and question this false reality and false-self that I began to see Truth and accept that which I was ignoring, numbing, and stuffing all along: unhappiness.

You see, I was reacting to life rather than responding to it. More specifically, I was reacting to the needs of my ego false-self and also to the egoic needs of others, and of society, that I ‘thought’ I had to meet in order to be worthy of love. But the Truth is, we are worthy–especially of love–devoid of what we do, what we have, and what others think of us. But, I would have never learned this, and many other truths, had I not Paused to question myself and my reality.

I want you to become self-aware; I want you to see Truth. But most importantly, I want you to Know Your Truth and Live Your Dream.
